Matty-boy —

What a fireman you were for Halloween! Mr. Congenial! I’m trying to stop nursing, mainly due to your new little teeth that have funally cut on the bottom. I think the top two front teeth aren’t far behind because you’re sure ornery for Matty-boy. The problem is that you just aren’t interested in a bottle & would rather drink from a cup! You’re getting all over the place & I think by a month more you may be walking.

Dear Matty-boy (that’s what A. & P. call you),

Your bottom teeth are finally breaking through. Not only are you showing the teething strains but your mothers is too and is trying to cut back on the nursing - we’re indending to quit altogether (you get so mad when I cut short the nursing time), but gradually.

You’ve had all three DPT shots & 2 OPV so you don’t get another shot until the end of April. You are a heavy guy! I’m starting to get back pains from hauling you around, but I love to take you everywhere. You’re a fun baby! Someone suggested the other day, that we should have you be a Sumo wrestler for Halloween.

You’re just a rare delight! Your latest fun trick is mouth blubbering - every conceivable spitting noise is included in your repertoire.

Dear Matthew,

If I’ve said it before, it can’t be said too much: you are truly a “gift of God.” Every day we or someone else comments on your infectious smile. It seems to come from the bottom of your sweet little soul every time you look at someone, and what a great little guy you are to put up with the reign of terror Miss Adrienne Moench has around this house. She wasn’t quite ready to have someone else take over her playpen, car seat, crib and especially her position in the family. I don’t know if she ever will be ready, but she does love you & calls you “Matty,” or “Matts.” You still haven’t cut a tooth but are crawling and climbing everywhere. Everybody adores you Matt, you’re definitely the World’s Greatest Baby: always behaving, grinning, cuddling and happy. This picture was taken on the Labor Day Weekend at the Ranch. We went up for a picnic on Labor [Day]. All the Moenches but Brooke & Phil & Ben were there. Grandpa cooked a whole lamb over the spit. It was grand. This is Christina holding you in the hammock. Mary Snow is next to you.

Pat says of Matt: “He’s the terrific loud-mouth that talks.”

Dear Matthew,

You’re suddenly all over the place! I caught you on the 4th stair a few days ago. You love to pull yourself up to anything; the problem with that is then you can’t get back down so you either cry or fall over. You love to get up though & can stand quite a while — sorry, have to go. Three children is a killer! And right now you’re stuck under the table. Love Mom

"Matt <—> Matthew" - (written later by the baby himself. This could be a diagram showing how both variants point to the same boy.)
"Matthew: your blessing day. Ah - the look of contentment - and such grace in your fingertips! Even though dear, sweet sister looks like she wants to punch someone."

Dearest little Matthew,

It would be grand to be able to make a show of fireworks with words to herald your arrival in our family.

You are simply one of life’s most treasured blessings. Becoming pregnant with you was quite a surprise and I’ll be truthful and say we weren’t ready for another baby. But, you dear, are a rare gem! I thought all along that if you were a boy Matthew would be a good name. The name itself means “gift of God,” and I thought that surely must be true about you since we hadn’t planned your arrival.

We all simply adore you! Adrienne has her days when she still wants to be the baby, and I don’t blame her. I try to remind myself to hug her & cuddle her more so she won’t feel like we’re trying to hurry her along too much.

You have the most infectious smile we’ve ever seen and have a look of such complete trust with most everyone you meet. I’d like to say it’s because we love you so, but can’t be sure. You’re definitely a great baby. You rarely cry and adore Adrienne and Patrick. I can’t explain in words how happy we are to have you in our family.

Love,

Mom

Matt’s infamous birth picture above was the decision maker for his name. I liked “James” & “Matthew” but felt like “James” should belong to a boy with a beautiful face. When I saw this picture I said, “This is a Matthew M_____”

for Matthew

"This book belongs to: ‘A’" is most likely my sister, who wanted to control everything.
